GBU-24 Paveway III laser guided bomb

GBU-24 LGB on display at the Air Force Museum

In the mid-1970s, the USAF began work on the Paveway III system, which was intended to give LGBs a more efficient guidance system and a better glide performance (hence increased standoff range). The Paveway III seekers would use proportional guidance rather than the "bang-bang" system of earlier rounds, which deflected the control surfaces fully.

The GBU-24 uses the Mk.84 2,000lb bomb, or the BLU-109/116 penetrator weapons. USAF carrier aircraft include the F-15E, F-16C, FA-18, and formerly the F-14 Tomcat. Foreign aircraft capable of using the weapon include the F-16A MLU, Tornado, Mirage 2000, and formerly the F-111C.
