Although supersonic flight would not be achieved until 1947, planning by the USAAF and the American aircraft industry for a supersonic combat aircraft was already under way shortly after the end of WWII. Particularly important was the need for high speed interceptor

Although the Thunderceptor bore some degree of family resemblance to Republic's F-84, the XF-91 was a quite different aircraft, and was easily one of the more advanced concepts to actually take to the air in the early postwar period.
